The Palette Hacking Doc

by toma

Mwahahaha... this doc will take you to the outer reaches of palette hacking. Yep, la. Anyway, let's get started shall we?

1 - Stuff You Will Need

This doc
Nesticle
A hex editor
A rom
A computer
Yay!

2 - The Charts

This is a little chart I cooked up that will be extremely useful to you in your travels. Why? Because it shows all 64 NES colors!

3 - Changing The Palette

Ooh, this is the really hard part. Actually, it isn't really. It's not hard at all to tell the truth! I'll write it down in a few easy steps for you, how's that for helpful? =) Just be warned, the palette data may show up in the rom more than once. It's always best to back up your original file!

1. Open the rom in Nesticle
2. Click "View", "Palette" or press F4. Wonder of wonders! There it is!
3. Click on the numbers and copy down (or just remember) the hex values of whatever it is you want to change. They are arranged in groups of four. Copy them down. (eg. 00 0F 10 1F)
4. Pick the new colors you wanna use with my nifty chart. Use hex numbers, not decimal ones! Yahoo! (eg. 0F 31 21 3A)
5. Open up the rom in a hex editor.
6. Search for the original hex values.
7. Type in your new hex values over the old ones.
8. Save!

There we go, that wasn't so hard was it? Believe it or not, we're all finished now! Isn't that great? =D

If you want to use this doc, leave it just as it is! the only thing you can change is the background and colors and stuff to make it match with your page. Make sure you got the RGB.GIF! Otherwise, please don't change stuff! And you better keep this note here too! =P Bum...
